Laverne Canady

LaVerne Canady is an associate director in the Social Marketing and Communication (SMC) department of FHI 360. She is a member of the SMC senior management team and has over 18 years of experience in health communication, social marketing, and partnership development. She provides strategic communication and project management leadership to clients including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA).

Since 2012, Ms. Canady has served as the deputy director for the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR), a partnership formed to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and application of childhood obesity research. In addition to managing the project team and day-to-day activities of the Collaborative, she develops plans for engaging new partners committed to NCCOR’s mission, oversees strategic planning and communication initiatives, and plans in-person and virtual meetings of the NCCOR membership. Ms. Canady currently leads two projects to promote racial equity, one providing communication support to the Black Women’s Health Imperative and the other a truth and reconciliation project working with organizations in Jefferson County, Alabama. Ms. Canady has significant expertise planning and managing conferences and meetings. For NCCOR she has planned and implemented scientific workshops, senior leadership briefings and NCCOR member meetings. She has also designed and developed content for large-scale trainings for SAMHSA programs grantees including Safe Schools/ Healthy Students and Project Launch grantees.
